FAQs on PE potable water pipes

What are potable water pipes used for?
Blue water supply pipe is used to transport potable drinking water to homes and businesses. Mains potable water pipe is used for underground water distribution systems, whereas service pipes supply water to streets or groups of buildings from the boundary box to the property.

Blue MDPE (medium density polyethylene) pipes are used to transport clean drinking (potable) water from mains supplies to homes. Blue is a universal indicator of water systems carrying clean, safe water suitable for human consumption.

In the UK, potable water suppliers should use WRAS approved materials for distributing clean drinking water, like our potable water pipe range.

In buried pipe networks, it’s easy to determine which kind of pipe you need by the colour used. Blue PE pipe is used for potable water, whereas black PE pipe is used for non-potable water supply. Note, black PE can be used for above ground drinking water applications as it has UV stabilisers which ensure no degradation to the material when exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time. Blue however is for buried systems only.
In the UK, potable water pipes must meet the requirements outlined by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme, WRAS. This certification body helps prevent the contamination of public water, including drinking water. As well as full compliance to Regulation 31 of the Drinking Water Inspectorate, DWI.
