FAQs on PE gas & hydrogen pipes.

Can gas pipes be used for hydrogen?
Yes. Natural gas pipelines can be used to transport hydrogen. Our yellow and orange gas pipes are suitable for both of these applications under PP1547:2022.
The type of PE pipe you need depends on its intended use. Yellow gas pipes are the best option for low-medium pressure pipelines, whereas orange pipes are a better choice for higher pressure. For demanding environments, e.g. landfill, we offer a range of specialist pipes designed to withstand these conditions.
Permeation of hydrogen compared to natural gas is much higher, polyethylene used in our gas pipe is designed and tested to be highly resistant to hydrogen damage. This limits the chances of leaks for even high pressure pipelines.
Compliant gas pipes are critical for ensuring zero disruption to supply. All of our range complies with GIS PL2 & PP1547:2022 approvals, including our fabricated and electrofusion fittings.
While PE pipes are just as strong as traditional gas pipe materials such as steel or cast iron, polyethylene outperforms these materials in a number of ways. They’re flexible, corrosion resistant and incredibly lightweight, making them an ideal choice for gas distribution networks and have an unmatched 50+ year design life requiring minimal maintenance.
Yes, PE gas pipes are considered a viable option for future hydrogen networks. Their flexibility, durability and resistance to corrosion make them well-suited for transporting hydrogen safely and efficiently as the energy sector transitions towards greener solutions the latest version GIS PL2-2 / 8 have the inclusion of PP1547:2022 which states the suitability of use with hydrogen.
